When the temperature drops, I know I’m guilty of throwing on my comfiest layers and calling it a day. This year, I’ve decided to invest more in my winter wardrobe and find ways to feel inspired when getting dressed. Winter doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to get more creative with your wardrobe by experimenting with textures, layering, and even reimagining the pieces you already own.
Start with the Basics
Don’t overcomplicate things. Start with your favorite long sleeve basic tee, my recommendations are this one from Eterne or for a better price, this one from Skims. IMO, having a high quality and comfy basic as my bottom layer makes me feel more put-together.
For your bottom half, invest in a good pair of tights. Sure the ones from Target are good in a pinch, but you can typically only get maybe 1 use out of them before they start snagging like crazy. I suggest a pair from Wolford or Commando. They’re on the more expensive side for one pair, but I’d rather spend $60 once than spend $10 any time I need tights.
Wool Coats > Puffers
*If you have a job that requires you to be outdoors for the majority of the day, disregard this*
Don’t get me wrong, I love my black puffer, but it’s definitely not the most stylish item in my closet. A few Decembers ago, I bit the bullet and dropped some money on a black Anne Klein wool coat (I cannot for the life of me find it online, so linking a similar one here). This year, I snagged a brown one (on sale!!) from Hollister and I can’t stop talking about it.
Even throwing on a wool coat over sweats and a sweater can pull the whole outfit together.

Find Your Go-To Boot
I’m gonna cut to the chase and list some of my picks:
Tony Bianco Wolfe Bootie - $240
Hunter Women's Original Tall Rain Boots - $175
Jones Chocolate Brown Suede - $130
Bibi Lou Zagreb Stompy Boots - $230
A good quality boot for fall/winter is a must.
Shop Secondhand
Honestly, vintage/thrift stores have some of the best winter pieces. Nothing beats finding a good vintage trench or leather jacket for a fraction of what it would cost new. Not to mention, good quality coats and jackets can be super pricy these days. If you’re looking for designer winter pieces, I suggest The Real Real or even looking into a Rent The Runway subscription (they’re offering a discount on plans right now for Black Friday).
Embrace Color
When I think winter I think dark or neutral colors (blacks, browns, beige, burgundy, etc). As a person who is usually wearing neutrals, adding color to my winter wardrobe can be tough. If you’re like me, here are a few ideas:
Colorful scarves: I love this one from Yllw The Label (Acne Studios vibes for a fraction of the cost).
Beanies: The Ganni beanies have a chokehold on me. So many colors to choose from, but they’re on the pricier side, so they could be a Christmas gift idea!
Prints: Hill House Home and Tuckernuck have some REALLY cute colorful and printed pieces if you’re looking to add some fun to your wardrobe.
